Rare Mirage Lasts for 4 Hours off East China Shore

Rare Mirage Lasts for 4 Hours off East China Shore

Thousands of tourists and local residents witnessed a mirage of high clarity lasting for four hours off the shore of Penglai City in east China's Shandong Province on Sunday.
Mists rising on the shore created an image of a city, with modern high-rise buildings, broad city streets and bustling cars as well as crowds of people all clearly visible.
The city of Penglai had been soaked by two days of rain before the rare weather phenomenon occurred.
The mirage took place during the week-long Labor Day holiday. The small city received over 30,000 tourists on Sunday.
Experts said that many mirages have been recorded in Penglai, on the tip of Shandong Peninsula, throughout history, which made it known as a dwelling place of the gods.
They explained that a mirage is formed when moisture in the air becomes warmer than the temperature of sea water, which refracts rays of sunlight to create reflections of the landscape in the sky
.

This is amazing! I had always thought that mirages were more of an individual, neurological phenomena caused by delirium from lack of water, ect. Here is the How Stuff Works article on mirages. It's very basic, but will give you a good basic understanding of mirages. It has some good links at the end also, with more indepth explinations.
I do wonder though, was the mirage of
Penglai City, or some other city?

eBay rules that New Zealand not for sale

eBay rules that New Zealand not for sale

SYDNEY, Australia -- New Zealand is not for sale, despite somebody in neighboring Australia trying to offload the nation of 4 million to the highest online bidder. With a starting offer of just one cent, brisk bidding for the prime chunk of South Pacific real estate quickly boosted the price to 3,000 Australian dollars (US$2,330) before eBay pulled the plug on the auction this week. "Clearly New Zealand is not for sale," eBay Australia spokesman Daniel Feiler told the New Zealand Press Association, adding that 22 bids had been made before the company acted. "It is mostly household items we have for sale, but there are the occasional quirky items put up," he added. "We have a look at them and if they are OK we leave them, but if it is something that can't be sold, we take them off." The trader has not been named, but apparently was unimpressed with the country he was trying to sell. The rivalry between the two countries is intense and in his advertisement the man said New Zealand had "very ordinary weather." (AP)

Damn, I was so exited at the thought of finally having my very own island.

I have a 3/4" or so long scar on the underside of my chin. I got it by being a moron. I decided to try climbing over a gate in sandals and a dress, instead of going around it. Yes, I was very drunk. I fell on my face, and split my chin wide open. Then I proceeded to try to convince the folks I was with that I was in fact not hurt very bad, despite the fact that there was a 1/4" wide gap in my face. Happily, they made me go get stitches. Don't drink & climb kids! Just don't do it.

2. When did you get your first tattoo?
2001

3. What was your first tattoo?
It's a butterfly. yeah, yeah, I know what you're thinking. But it has huge personal significance to me, the shape of the wings, the colors, the designs in the eye spots, all of it.

4. Which tattoo is closest to your heart (not in a literal sense... I mean as far as emotional attachment goes)?
Well, having one makes that pretty easy, huh?

5. Do you have a matching tattoo with someone?
nope

6. Do you have a tattoo that someone fucked up?
Nope. I waited until I could go to a skilled professional.

7. Do you have anyone's name tattooed on you?

Again, having just one(for now) makes that pretty easy, huh?

9. Have you ever cried during a tattoo?
Nope

I'd like to quote Joe Boo on this one- "Wouldn't that make it the end of the session?" And, no.

11. Do you have a tattoo that you constantly have to explain to people because no one can tell what the hell it is?
Nope. Again, I waited until I could go to a skilled professional

12. Have you ever gotten an infection from a tattoo?
Nope. I actually kept it clean and took care of it after I got it. And I went to a reputable shop instead of getting it down in some dirty, shady back room place that doesn't sterilize their equipment & tools!

13. What is the longest session you've ever sat straight through?
About 4 hours

Again, having just one (for now) makes that pretty easy, huh? 8 hours in so far, 2 more to go.

Nope. It's kinda permanent to get something for the shock value, don't you think?

Well, my butterfly needs a little more work. Also, it's going to be a full back piece someday...

17. What is the most you've ever spent on a tattoo?

Playlist

Okay, I'm going to do something a little different today. I'm not quite ready to talk about what's been going on lately, so I'm going to put down the lyrics for the songs that I have been listening to a lot, and are descriptive of how I'm feeling.

The Loudest Sound - The Cure
Side by side in silence
They pass away the day
So comfortable, so habitual ...
And so nothing left to say
...
And side by side in silence
Without a single word...
...
It's the loudest sound I ever heard

Underneath the Ice - Assemblage 23
I can feel the violence
Spill across the floor
My eyes have grown too clouded
To see it anymore

Fading into nothing
Turning into steam
Left in desparation
With nothing to redeem

Underneath the ice I find
A place to rest my weary mind
The cold deep water numbs my pain
Until I can face myself again

Waiting for redemption
That never seems to come
Hands reach beneath the surface
But I don't know where from

I'm not ready to return yet
I just need a moment more
So I can try to remember
What it is I came here for

Underneath the ice I find
A place to rest my weary mind
The cold deep water numbs my pain
Until I can face myself again

Sinking Fast
Too dark to see
The buzzing din
Envelopes me
Too late now
Nowhere to go
I'm sinking in
The undertow

Cooling - Tori Amos
Maybe I didn't like to hear
But I still can't believe
Speed Racer is dead
So then I thought I'd make some plans
But fire thought she'd really rather be water instead
...
And I've heard every word that you have said
And I know I have been driven like the snow
This is cooling
Faster than I can
This is cooling
Faster than I can
...
So then love walked up to like
And said I know that you don't like me much
Let's go for a ride
...
And I've heard every word that you have said
And I know I have been driven like the snow, but
This is cooling
Faster than I can
Hey yes, faster than I can
Hey, this is cooling
This is cooling

Love Will Tear Us Apart -Joy Division
When routine bites hard,
And ambitions are low,
And resentment rides high,
But emotions won't grow,
And we're changing our ways,
Taking different roads.

Then love, love will tear us apart again.
Love, love will tear us apart again.

Why is the bedroom so cold?
You've turned away on your side.
Is my timing that flawed?
Our respect runs so dry.
Yet there's still this appeal
That we've kept through our lives.

But love, love will tear us apart again.
Love, love will tear us apart again.

You cry out in your sleep,
All my failings exposed.
And there's a taste in my mouth,
As desperation takes hold.
Just that something so good
Just can't function no more.

But love, love will tear us apart again.
Love, love will tear us apart again.
Love, love will tear us apart again.
Love, love will tear us apart again.

Signal To Noise - The Cure

Nothing I do makes much sense
Say you don't really get me anymore
I wonder if you ever did... if you ever did at all?

Nothing I want means a lot
Say you don't understand me like before
I'm not sure if you ever did... if you ever did at all?

Nothing I think has a point
Say you don't quite believe me anymore
I wonder if you ever did... if you ever did at all?

Gets hard to guess the best way through
The thing to do if none of this is true
I wish I knew how to undo
The doubt I hide inside
I grew in you...

The knot I hide inside I tied in you...

Nothing I am shows the way
Say you don't seem to know me like before
I'm not sure if you ever did... if you ever did at all?

No nothing I do makes much sense
Say you don't really get me anymore
I wonder if you ever did... if you ever did at all?

Gets hard to guess the best way through
The thing to do if none of this is true
I wish I knew how to undo
The knot I tied in you...
When more or less the yes and no
Is all for show it isn't really so...
Look high and low where did we go?
You moved too fast or maybe I just moved too slow?

There's so much noise...
All the signal seems to fade away
Too much noise...

Or could be this is how it always sounds
With nothing left?

Northern Lad-Tori Amos
Had a northern lad
Well not exactly had
He moved like the sunset
God who painted that
First he love my accent
How his knees could bend
I thought we'd be ok
Me and my molasses

But I feel someting is wrong
But I feel this cake just isn't done
Don't say that you Don't
And if you could see me now
Said if you could see me now
Girls you've got to know
When it's time to turn the page
When you're only wet
Because of the rain

He don't show much these days
It's gets so fucking cold
I loved his secret places
But I can't go anymore
"you change like sugar cane"
Says me northern lad
I guess you go too far
When pianos try to be guitars

I feel the west in you
And I feel it falling apart too
Don't say that you Don't
And if you could see me now

Said if you could see me now
Girls you've got to know
When it's time to turn the page
When you're only wet
Because of the rain
When you're only wet
Because of the rain

Cocoon - Assemblage 23
Even though I know it's only chemical
These peaks and valleys are beginning to take their toll
Try to convince myself that all it takes is time
But the most derisive voice I hear is mine

It opens all the scars on me
It leaves me shaken in my belief
It takes my hand just to drag me down
It makes me a stranger in the crowd

Give me isolation just for now
I feel a hard rain coming down
I promise that I will be back soon
But for now I'll return to my cocoon

There is thunder in the distance and the sky grows gray
There is lightning in the clouds in search of prey
It's not a matter of if as much as when
The clouds will break and the rainfall will begin

It opens all the scars on me
It leaves me shaken in my belief
It takes my hand just to drag me down
It makes me a stranger in the crowd

Give me isolation just for now
I feel a hard rain coming down
I promise that I will be back soon
But for now
I'll return to my cocoon

Cracks in the chrysalis spread out like tiny snakes
That hiss a litany of rumors and mistakes
But I'm afraid their cause is fraught with futility
There is nothing more that they can take from me
It opens all the scars on meIt leaves me shaken in my belief
It takes my hand just to drag me down
It makes me a stranger in the crowd

Give me isolation just for now
I feel a hard rain coming down
I promise that I will be back soon
But for now I'll return to my cocoon

I understand, but I believe that we will be alright. I believe in you, I believe in me, and I believe in us. I have played this song over and over, It says what I am feeling almost perfectly (especially the parts I have highlighted). Remember that I love you, and that I will always love you.

-Buttercup

Tell her not to go
I ain't holding on no more
Tell her something in my mind freezes up from time to time

Tell her not to cry
I just got scared that's all
Tell her I'll be by her side, all she has to do is call

Tell her the chips are down
I drank too much and shouted it aloud
Tell her something in my heart
Needs her more than even clouns need the laughter of the crowd

Tell her what was wrong
I sometimes think too much
But say nothing at all
Tell her from this high Terrain, I am ready now to fall

Tell her not to go
I Ain't holding on no more
Tell her nothing if not this; all I want to do is kiss her

Tell her somthing in my mind
Freezes up from time to time

Hey baby. I'm sorry that you're hurting right now. I wish I could be there to give you a huge hug... I will be in a couple of days and even if you can't come to my mama's house, I will try to get over to your house - even for an hour - just so I can give you a hug.

I love you Trish!

Doing the right thing sucks

It sure as hell doesn't make a hard thing any easier because you know it's right.

I think perhaps that's really all I have to say right now.

*Thinks about it for a minute.*

Yup, it is.

Never Brush Your Teeth Again? or, War Tech That Changed Life

Inventions that Began on the Battlefield Thrive in the Home

There's a new product in development that could change your nightly ritual forever.

The Wrigley Gum Company has paired up with the U.S. military to create an anti-bacterial chewing gum that actually cleans teeth so soldiers wouldn't have to stop what they're doing to brush their pearly whites.

If the military signs on to it, there's a good chance it will end up in your medicine cabinet one day.

Other military inventions that we now use daily include:
-The steam engine

-The microwave oven

-Many hiking boots are made from the same materials. as the military's stealth jet technology.

-The Medevac helicopter

-The "trench coat" got its name from soldiers in World War I who wore the military jackets in the trenches.

-And of course, what one Pentagon officials dubbed the "Intergalactic Network." Which is what became the internet.

Therefore it is important to refresh your memory on the etiquette of this sublime outdoor cooking, as it's the only type of cooking a real man will do; probably because there is an element of danger involved.

When a man volunteers to do the BBQ the following chain of events are put into motion:

Routine...
1) The woman buys the food.

2) The woman makes the salad, prepares the vegetables, and makes dessert.

3) The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along with the necessary cooking utensils and sauces, and takes it to the man who is lounging beside the grill - beer in hand.

Here comes the important part:
4) THE MAN PLACES THE MEAT ON THE GRILL.

More routine....
5) The woman goes inside to organize the plan and cutlery.

6) The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is burning. He thanks her and asks if she will bring another beer while he deals with the situation.

Another Important part:
7) THE MAN TAKES THE MEAT OFF THE GRILL AND HANDS IT TO THE WOMAN.

More routine.....

8) The woman prepares the plates, salad, bread, utensils, napkins, sauces and brings them to the table.

9) After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes.

And most important of all:
10) Everyone PRAISES the MAN and THANKS HIM for his cooking efforts.

11) The man asks the woman how she enjoyed "her night off."

Upon seeing her annoyed reaction, he concludes
that there's just no pleasing some women....

Things that I'm thankful for today explained

Okay, before I get rolling on posting this Thankfulness thing I've been doing, I probably aught to tell you what it is. After reading this Psychology Today article titled Make a Gratitude Adjustment, I decided to give it a try and keep my own 'Thankful List'. (Scroll down to read a couple of excerpts from the article.) I decided that I would write down at least 3 things that I am thankful for each day. Why 3? I don't know, it just seemed like a good number at the time. Most days I exceed 3 items even! A lot of it is little things, like having tacos, but it's still something I am feeling particularly thankful for that day. It may be at least partially because it's warmer, and we have more daylight right now, but it seems like it really has made me feel generally happier, and better about life. So at any rate, this is the reason behind all these 'Things that I'm thankful for today' posts that are coming soon to a blog near you!

Make a Gratitude Adjustment

Gratitude is a sentiment we'd all do well to cultivate, according to positive psychologists, mental health clinicians and researchers who seek to help everyone create more joy in life. Feeling thankful and expressing that thanks makes you happier and heartier not hokier.

The biggest bonuses come from experiencing gratitude habitually, but natural ingrates needn't despair. Simple exercises can give even skeptics a short-term mood boost, and "once you get started, you find more and more things to be grateful for," says Robert Emmons, a leading gratitude researcher at the University of California at Davis.

Gratitude needn't be directed at another person to hit its mark. Take just a few minutes each day to jot down things that make you thankful, from the generosity of friends to the food on your table or the right to vote. After a few weeks, people who follow this routine "feel better about themselves, have more energy and feel more alert," Emmons says. Feeling thankful even brings physical changes, studies show. List-keepers sleep better, exercise more and gain a general contentment that may counteract stress and contribute to overall health.

For people who want to activate their gratitude, but feel slightly silly about the exercises, Peterson advises, "fake it until you can make it." Say "thank you" enough, he reasons, and your mind will fall in line with your words. Think you don't have anyone to thank? Gratitude "doesn't depend on circumstances," Emmons says.

You can be grateful for just about anything that you've received in part because of someone or something else. You may feel grateful to your neighbor for a car pool, to luck for meeting your spouse, to nature for a scenic view or to fate or a higher power for your safety. Thankfulness helps you see that you're an object of love and care. Says Emmons: "Your self-esteem is bolstered when you say, 'Hey, people have done things for me.'"

Traumatic memories fade into the background for people who regularly feel grateful, Watkins's experiments show. Troublesome thoughts pop up less frequently and with less intensity, which suggests that gratitude may enhance emotional healing. Thankfulness helps the brain fully process events, Watkins speculates. Grateful people achieve closure by making sense of negative events so that they mesh with a generally positive outlook.

When individuals start a daily gratitude journal, they begin to feel a greater sense of connectedness to the world. "The differences are noticed by others," Emmons says. "People who know them say they're more helpful." Thankfulness may launch a happy cycle in which rich friendships bring joy, which gives you more to be grateful for, which fortifies your friendships once again.
